MISSION 
This office is sworn to uphold the Statutes of the State of Maine And the ordinances of the Town of Alfred. In doing so we will endeavor to be a service to the citizens of Alfred, acting in a professional and cooperative manner to create a atmosphere of goodwill in all matters of this office.

Introduction and Responsibilities
The Code enforcement position is a hired position versus an elected position. The Code Enforcement Officer (CEO) is hired by the Board of Selectmen.

The responsibilities of the office is varied and includes jurisdiction in several fields including but not limited to; Building Standards, Land Use Regulations, Shore Land Zoning, Legal Issues, Handicap Accessibility, Flood Plain Coordination, Energy Conservation Standards.
Alfred is required by State Statute to employ a State certified Local Plumbing Inspector (LPI). In Alfred this position is included in the responsibilities of the CEO. The LPI issues all plumbing permits, inspects the installation of all sub surface waste water disposal systems (SSWDS), and all internal plumbing installations. Additionally, Alfred requires the CEO perform the duties of the 911 Addressing Officer.

BUILDING PERMIT REQUIREMENTS
Section 105 of the Maine Uniform Building and Energy Codes;      
Effective:  March 31, 2012

REQUIRED
Any owner or authorized agent who intends to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move, demolish, or change the occupancy of a building or structure, or to erect, install, enlarge, alter, repair, remove,  convert or replace any electrical, gas , mechanical or plumbing system, the installation of which is regulated by the codes, or to cause any such work to be done, shall first make application to the Building Official and obtain the required permit.

EXCEPTIONS
One story, detached accessory structures, used as tool and storage sheds, playhouses and similar uses, provided the floor area does not exceed 120 square feet,  fences not over 6 feet high, sidewalks,  swings and other playground equipment, replacement roofing, replacement siding, replacement windows provided that no structural changes to the building are required as part of such work; the Code Enforcement Officer shall be consulted before starting this type of work.

NOTICE
