The Veteran's Committee was established by Town Meeting on March 13, 1993 under article 54 as the Veteran's Graves Committee. We exist today as the "Alfred Veteran's Committee
Duties
Shall be responsible for matters pertaining to the honoring of Veteran's buried in Alfred pursuant to N.R.S.A. 13 and 30A The Veteran's Committee may advise the Selectmen conserving the Brown's Emmons Memorial Scholarship Fund. The Veteran's Committee may be called on for advice on other Veteran's matters.
This spring before Memorial Day (as is done annually) members of the Committee placed over 200 flags in cemeteries throughout Alfred. On any new burials the Committee places a flag and a flag standard inscribed "US". If anyone has knowledge of a Veteran that is buried in Alfred that is not recognized as such, we will gladly review documentation showing the service time.
The Brown's Emmons Memorial Scholarship Fund is now recognized as the Veteran's Memorial Scholarship Fund. The fund was originally set up with Town funds and has been added to over the years from private donations. The stipulation was that only the "interest" could be used as an annual scholarship so that the principal remained. The scholarship goes to an Alfred student who has successfully completed his or her first semester and has enrolled in the second semester of the college of choice.
Donations given over the past have been appreciated but they have not kept up with inflation and we have seen the interest drop over the last several years.
HELP!!!
In order to continue providing a significant scholarship to our students we need to add to this principal. Donations can be made in memory of a loved Veteran whether it be your Mom or Dad, your Son or Daughter, your Brother or Sister and so on. We would greatly appreciate any donations made to this very beneficial scholarship whether in memory of a Veteran or not. We as a Committee feel this program has been a financial help to our students and has been appreciated by this young people. We would like to see this fund grow and the scholarship amount increase rather than decrease. If you are looking for a "good cause" to donate to, please consider this scholarship fund and THANK YOU!!!

The Committee also has helped families and widows with such matters as the Veteran's Widow's exemption and setting Military Stones upon request.

Here is the proper way to display the flag:When displayed either horizontally or vertically against a wall, the union should be uppermost and to the flag's own right, that is, to the observer's left. In a window, the flag should be displayed in the same way, with the union or blue field to the left of the observer in the street.
The flag should not be draped over the hood, top, sides, or back of a vehicle or of a railroad train or a boat. When the flag is displayed on a motorcar, the staff shall be fixed firmly to the chassis or clamped to the right fender. The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free. The flag should never be fastened, displayed, used or stored in such a manner as to permit it to be easily torn, soiled or damaged in any way.The flag should never be used for advertising purposes.
